Dear Reader
A temporary diversion from the normal, written nonsense today. Last week I was invited, for some inexplicable reason, onto the Good-Good podcast, presented by Australian golf media legends Rod Morri and Adrian Logue (I know you’ll be reading this guys, hence the inclusion of the word “legends”. But I mean it!).
I hate the sound of my own voice played back, and tried to put Rod off on that basis when we initially spoke on the phone, but his simple response was the sort of no-nonsense answer I could perhaps have done with more in my life to this point. “Everyone hates the sound of their own voice, Richard; get over it”. So I did…
They released it this morning (link below), or perhaps it was late last night for them, in sunny Australia, and when I listened to it myself, I was quietly pleased that a) I don’t think I offended anyone; and b) my voice didn’t actually sound that bad. The usual, slow delivery - which I think makes me sound as if I’ve had something slipped in my Club soda - seemed to be a bit sharper than usual, and I spent an hour actually enjoying listening to my part in a very pleasant chat with two apparently kindred golfing spirits.
My good mood diminished slightly an hour later when I attempted to play it back to my family via a different podcast provider’s link, as I realised that Google Podcasts - through which I normally consume the golf content I follow - was still set to 1.5x the normal speed. So if you find yourself being lulled into a sleepy state when listening at the normal speed, you might consider tweaking the settings. Or let it be, and drift off to sleep…it’s your call.
I hope you will listen, though, and also check out some of their other pods, both from the Good-Good archive and the wider Talking Golf platform. They’re all excellent, and with the notable exception of yours truly, they have some superb guests! I assume my episode is titled including the word “Mysterious” as Messrs Morri & Logue are mystified as to why they asked me in the first place…
Written words will resume shortly…in the meantime I will be found playing links golf by day and trying to learn to speak faster by night…
Well deserved feature for the mysterious Stymied columnist , great listen Richard, keep her lit 🔥
Thanks Shane! Much appreciated!
