Beautiful piece. I'm reminded of driving back to the Omaha NB airport after an event at Dismal River in northeast Nebraska with a buddy. Rather than taking the dull intersate 80, we took a two lane state highway through mile upon mile of sand dunes. Everywhere we looked on either side of the road, all we could see/imagine were "cool", "neat," or "awesome" golf holes. Even when there's no golf course, the game has a pull on our psyche...

Excellent article, beautiful writing!

When I'm traveling on new roads, it's amazing the Pavlovian response that's triggered when I spot a green, a flag, a fairway off the side of the road. Trying to drive safe AND figure out the nature of the course and its name.

NZ is one of my favourites

It has everything you want in a golf course

Photo - it’s tougher there when asked to start on the fifth, instead of on the first!

I identify strongly with this. Probably helped by the fact that the imagery is very local to me. That road through New Zealand is particularly challenging - especially when viewed with an eye on condition (also the trait of a golfer). And let’s face it that course has its idiosyncrasies which make it even more interesting.

Also took me a while to get the course but eventually the par 3 over the water gave it away. Great fun.

Fabulous work. Please keep it up.
