The joy of playing with friends or new friends outweighs the disappointments of bad shots, excellent piece as usual Richard. I need to pick up some Alistair Cooke books.

What a wonderful reflection. Cooke’s prose on golf, with its mix of zeal and wry detachment, perfectly captures the game’s strange grip on us all. We may be addicts, but what a glorious addiction, filled with camaraderie and fleeting triumphs!

Love this, thank you! As the swelling hoards continue to overwhelm our church pews, your, "image of a pitiful man bent double in anguish," on a sleeve of balls will become a necessary regulation. Cheers.

Best yet. My Dad always talked about having good fixes or bad fixes but you always came back for more. The thought of having 'smoking' disclaimers on the outside of golf ball sleeves should be picked up by the manufacturers. Priceless.

In his last Letter from America, Alistair Cooke ended by saying - ‘but I have achieved that peace that surpasses all understanding ; the peace of a man who has given up golf’
