It is great re-reading many of your posts and this one rings so true with a golfcoach who has seen ten thousand bags pass through. Most are full of clubs unused over the last 20 outings or more as the golfer pulling the hideous trolley to transport the damn things is in no way in need of a full set. "My 5 iron doesn´t go any further than my 7" an oft heard lament. Well sir/madam, that 4 degree and 1/2inch increment per club combined with your swing characteristics is never going to produce that which the manufacturer or retailer suggested. More unfortunate is the ever-higher handicapper dialling in the range finder to determine whether this be a 43 or perhaps 44-yard pitch. Then select from too many, too pricey wedges. Think hard "how much o´clock" this club should be swung for 44 yards and then thin the crap out of it. Many could have benefitted from a simple set tailored to their ability/strength/age. A comforting driver, maybe a high numbered faiway-wood or hybrid. 4 or 5 irons/wedges and a putter that has a lovely feel. Think how many trolleys we could have avoided manufacturing. How many SUV¨s fewer would have been needed to fit the trolleys in. People could still drive pretty cars that actually corner well. What good we could have done for the environment, save us a fortune in coming CO2 taxes :-).

I love this...old clubs, or just second-hand ones...I love finding them, giving them another life, imagining what went right (and more often wrong) with the previous owner. These instruments have character, history, class. Give me an old set over some mass market, same as all the others set every day. Might cost me a few yards, and a few shots, but flush a blade or a persimmon (and even I can do that occasionally!) and the feeling is sublime!

It’s so fun to go out with a half set or my hickories. Making more creative shots & playing with feel & intuition sure is a pleasure. Cheers!

Isn't it wonderful?! Judging the shots...playing punch shots...a lost art!

Yes indeed! Love the finesse & ground game. Wish we had more links style courses in the US. Back to 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿 in May though😊

Unlike many Americans, I like to walk though only in the late fall to early spring as Houston is my home. About five years ago I split my set into evens and odds and bought a driver and a putter from 2nd Hand Golf. With a Hyperlite Callaway golf bag I have a set in the city and a set in the country.

Lovely! Such simplicity in this type of golf, and it's good for your game, too!

Reminds me - you can hire a set on the Isle of Barra from near the Police Station in Castlebay, for the princely sum of £5 for 24 hours. An odd mixture of types and brands, this scruffy set served me so well, I have been questioning my need for the shiny and new ever since.

A fine reflective piece - thanks.

Thanks Robin. I'm intrigued by your travels in golf, and by the motorcycle...we should speak sometime! I think we'd have a lot to talk about!
